United Supermarkets breaks ground on new store in Southwest Lubbock, donates $500,000 to United Way organizations

LUBBOCK, Texas — On Tuesday, United Supermarkets broke ground at the site of a new store in Lubbock at 114th Street and Slide Road. With a grand opening goal of Summer 2021, this twelfth Lubbock store will showcase the familiar favorites and new concepts United Supermarkets has to offer.

The amenities will include: Fresh, in-house Evie Mae’s Barbecue; a Tap House with craft beer and wine; a station for Asian Bowls and Sushi Bar; Texas Take-out; Starbuck’s; Streetside grocery pickup, delivery; as well as a full-service bakery, floral department, meat counter and more.

As United Supermarkets expands its presence in Southwest Lubbock, Sidney Hopper, president of the United Family, said he hopes this groundbreaking will symbolize the company’s ongoing commitment to the Lubbock community and its prosperity for decades to come.

“After arriving on the South Plains more than 70 years ago, United Supermarkets has grown up with the rest of its Lubbock family,” Hopper said. “Our neighborhood continues to grow and we are blessed to be growing with it. Our model has always been to be a neighborhood store — we want to be your store.”

Not only is this a commitment to serving guests between the aisles, but Robert Taylor, CEO of the United Family, says this store represents even more. It means more donations to combat food insecurity across the South Plains, investments in education as well as other organizations that address issues related to health, social sevices and quality of life.

“It’s often said at United, that we are in the service business, we just happen to sell groceries,” Taylor said. “The support our guests have given us for 104 years makes it possible for us to reinvest in the community the way we do. We thank our guests for their loyalty so we can continue to be community partners.”

This new location will add about 250 new jobs to the 4,200 people already employed by the United Family in Lubbock.

“This new United Family store is a huge deal in Lubbock and will serve South Lubbock residents well as this part of town continues to rapidly develop,” said Eddie McBride, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce CEO. “We’re proud of the jobs created by United and the families they support. We thank them also for their leadership role and the many investments made throughout our community.”

In addition to the new store announcement, the United Family also made its annual contribution to area United Way agencies in the amount of $500,000. Of that $500,000, $119,000 of it will go to the Lubbock Area United Way. This money is traditionally raised through the annual Jackie Pierce Charity Classic golf tournament which was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even under very unique and challenging circumstances, we were able to pull off something pretty special this year,” said Matt Corbin, marketing director for the United Family and JPCC Chairman. “The tenacity of this organization and their vendor partners to roll up their sleeves and ensure the United Way agencies depending on them were not disappointed was amazing to see. The tournament went on – even without the golf.”
